World Water Day

Today the 22nd of March marks World Water Day 💧

This day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the important of freshwater. Freshwater is the driving force behind all life on Earth and it is vital that we protect these resources.

Our rivers, lakes and groundwaters face many challenges today including:

1) Pollution from agricultural run-off, industrial and wastewater discharge,

2) Over-extraction of freshwater that depletes aquifers and rivers especially during dry-spells,

3) Invasive species, out compete native species that leads to changes in species composition and disruption to river and lake ecosystems.

Everyone has a role to play in protecting our freshwater resources. At an individual level there are many simple things we can do to conserve water including, taking shorter showers, fixing dripping taps, turning off the tap when brushing your teeth, watering plants in early morning or late evening, installing a water butt to harvest rainwater.
